Just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my T61. Works great!
I hated that bloated Vista Business!
Items that work out of the box:
– Nvidia: 2D works, 3D requires the installation of the proprietary drivers (nVidia Quadro NVS 140)
– Wireless: Atheros card
– Bluetooth keys
– Brightness keys
– Network Card Intel 10/100/1000
– Firewire
– Wireless switch
– 4-in-1 card reader
Worked with some simple tweaking:
– fingerprint reader for login and sudo
1. Install latest thinkfinger packages:
1 |
sudo apt-get install thinkfinger-tools libpam-thinkfinger |
2. Update the pam configuration files:
1 |
sudo /usr/lib/pam-thinkfinger/pam-thinkfinger-enable |
3. Restart computer
4. Enroll your fingerprint (creates $HOME/.thinkfinger.bir)
1 |
tf-tool --acquire |
5. Check fingerprint enrollment
1 |
tf-tool --verify |
hello!
I would like to have a question.
my pad is thinkpad r61 7755 as same of you.
but not always installed display driver on ubuntu 8.10.
i don’t know if my driver type not right.
aren’t you going to answer hqlong?
maybe other people would like to have that question, too.
My ThinkPad T61 has an nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M video card. I use the Nvidia driver version 177.80.
To enable the restricted driver, go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers.
thanks a lot. I got it working, but I have to press enter after scanning my finger. If you could find a fix for that it would be great.
Your problem is documented here. You will need to use Jon Oberheide’s packages.
Follow the instructions from ThinkWiki.

@hqlong: I Ubuntu 9.04 problems with the nvidia driver are gone. For me, that is 🙂
